The insight: Unlike earnings surprises, token unlocks are known exactly. The size, timing, and recipient type (VC vs team vs community) are public. Position before the crowd prices it in.
Trading Strategy
Core Approach: Short tokens before significant unlocks, cover after the selling pressure subsides.
Instrument Mix:
- 60% Short perpetuals on tokens with upcoming unlocks
- 20% Put options where available
- 20% Long BTC as hedge (unlocks often drag whole market)
Entry Rules:
- Identify unlocks where unlock_size > 10% of daily volume
- Enter short 5-10 days before unlock date
- Confirm unlock recipients are likely sellers (VCs, not community airdrops)
- Token unlock index (ME10011) score below 60
Unlock Type Analysis:
- VC unlocks: High probability selling (they need returns)
